Pacelines and pack work are fundamental to derby. A pace line is just a line of skaters moving at the same speed around the track, in a line. Skaters will move up from the back of the line or fall backwards from the front to rotate positions in the line. Learning how to move through a paceline is important for gaining pack skills and becoming comfortable skating close to your peers.
The pack or group is a bunch of skaters moving together around the track. Unlike a paceline a pack is somewhat disorganized and doesn’t necessarily move at the same speed. Skaters move forward, backward, and side to side relative to other skaters and still remain in the pack. Learning to move together with a group is an important skill and pack work is a major component of the skills we teach.
